It increases the output of respiratory tract fluid by reducing adhesiveness and surface tension facilitating removal of viscous mucus. Pseudoephedrine is a nasal decongestant to open up nasal passages allowing freer breathing. Guaifenesin is not for persistent cough such as occurs with smoking, asthma or emphysema, or where cough is accompanied by excessive secretions.  Persistent cough may indicate a serious condition.  If cough persists for more than 1 week, tends to recur, or is accompanied by high fever, rash or persistent headache, consult a physician.
